There once was a time when winter hiking and skiing meant tromping around in heavy Gore-Tex pants all day. And while Gore-Tex has vastly improved from the olden days of super-heavy nylon fabrics and 2-layer construction, it still has certain limitations (just like any other waterproof/breathable fabric does) when it comes to temperature regulation. The problem always used to be that you'd sweat inside your shell pants when you were on the move, and that sweat would then cause you to get chilled when you stopped. That's why soft shell pants are all the rage these days; they offer enough waterproofness to stand up to the snow, but not so much waterproofness that breathability is sacrificed and you get back into the old sweating-and-freezing cycle.
Designed for three-season alpine climbing, mountaineering, and trekking use, the Arc'Teryx Gamma AR pants are abrasion-resistant, snow-shedding pants with a soft brushed inner face for comfort. They're cut along the Trim Fit pattern, so expect to wear a base layer under them and not much more. Just like any other Arc'Teryx product, the Gamma AR pants are meticulously designed and constructed for maximum functionality and come with a long list of features - check it below.
