My first "no bounce" lumbar pack. Light, Versatile, great pockets. Review by Chris S (Staff)
While I can say that I have converted to the wonders of the trail running vest (Think: Salomon Hydro Set 5 or Ultimate Direction AK Race Vest 2.0), I am very impressed by Black Diamond's Fuse lumbar pack. The design of this pack is well thought out. The two aspects I like most about the pack are the wide and plush hip belt and the myriad of pockets (two stash on the belt, and a generous main compartment). My previous experiences with lumbar packs have left me wishing for more comfort and less bounce. The Fuse addresses both of these issues by designing a belt that is wide and wraps ones hips and has enough cushioning so it doesn't cut into one's hip bones. With a 30" waist, I use up most of the adjustment on the belt, BUT there is still enough strap so it is snug. Similar to my fit with lots of Osprey packs I have trimmed the remaining belt strapping as this pack looks like it could handle the waist of someone three times my size! My one complaint about the pack would be that they choose a sub-par material for the side water bottle holsters. While I appreciate the ability to adjust the girth of the pockets with the provided velcro straps so many sized bottles can fit, I think they would have been better off using a stretch mesh like they used on the hipbelt pockets -- it can be a slight struggle to get bottles in and out since the pocket material is unforgiving. My first run in this pack was a 30 mile trail run in the Whites and I was able to pack in an ample number of snacks and liquids to make the run possible. While I still had a saturated sweat spot on my middle back, the belt was airy enough that I wasn't uncomfortable.

If you are looking for a lumbar pack that can meet your trail needs and you don't want to break the bank on your first vest, I would give the Black Diamond Fuse a serious look. At about half the price of most vests, it is a serious contender!
