Design Features and Benefits
Air Sprung Cells-
Sea to Summit designed their mats with unique air cells that mimic the springs in a traditional mattress. Air Sprung Cells are individual, air-filled chambers within the air mattress that cushion body weight for a comfortable sleep. Each Air Sprung Cell absorbs changes in body position and pressure points independently of other cells, so the mat will not deform. This provides the most comfortable, supportive and reliable sleep experience possible.
Multi-Function Valve(s)-
Each Sea to Summit mat utilizes their proprietary Multi-Function Valve (patent pending). This unique valve features a one-way inflation port, a rapid air dump deflation port, and a micro-deflation button for fine-tuning the firmness of your mat. This valve allows you to quickly inflate or deflate the mat, which makes setting-up or tearing-down camp easier. The ability to fine tune your mattress. The
Comfort Plus and
Comfort Plus Insulated mats feature two separate layers of Air Sprung Cells that can be inflated to different levels of firmness using two different Multi-function valves.
Laminated TPU Construction-
All Sea to Summit sleeping mats are constructed from strong TPU layers. While most sleeping mat manufacturers bond the TPU layers and face fabrics in their mats using "roll-to-roll" lamination, Sea to Summit looked to medical and aeronautical equipment for a more reliable and durable lamination process. By utilizing a liquid-extruded TPU lamination process —uncommon in the outdoor industry— Sea to Summit ensures a more durable, consistent construction that will resist delamination.
40 Denier Ripstop Face Fabric-
A 40 Denier Nylon Ripstop fabric is laminated to the TPU layers. Sea to Summit specifically selected 40 denier fabric to provide an exceptional durability to weight ratio. The nylon ripstop construction resists tears and snags, while the lighter weight provides packability.
Layered Cell Construction (Some Models)-
Sea to Summit implemented multi-layer air cells in some mats. TheÂ
Comfort Plus and
Comfort Plus Insulated each feature two independent layers of air cells, while the
Comfort Light and
Comfort Light Insulated have double layered torso sections. The use of two layers in these models provides added comfort and insulating properties. In theÂ
Comfort Plus and
Comfort Plus Insulated, the layers are separate, which allows for independent levels of firmness or softness for excellent support and comfort. Additionally, if one layer is punctured, the other layer will remain inflated.
Thermolite Insulation and Exkin Platinum (Insulated Models)-
In the
Ultralight Insulated,Â
Comfort Light Insulated andÂ
Comfort Plus Insulated mats, Sea to Summit incorporated Thermolite synthetic insulation and Exkin Platinum reflective fabric to provide performance insulating properties. Thermolite insulation inside of the Air Sprung Cells in these models creates a barrier against convective heat transfer between the body and the cold ground. Additionally, a layer of reflective Exkin Platinum redistributes heat back to the body. These insulating components provide increased R-values, which measure the warmth of an insulating pad. An insulated pad is notably warmer, as the R-value of theÂ
Comfort Plus Insulated is measured as a 5, while the non-insulatedÂ
Comfort Plus checks in at a 2.5.
Product Line Overview
The
UltraLight series of mats from Sea to Summit are, of course the lightest mats in the lineup. At just 12.5 oz for the
UltraLight and 15.5 oz for the insulated version, these mats provide exceptional comfort in a minimalist package. Â The
UltraLight series mats offer a single layer of Air Sprung Cells for maximum packability, while remaining supportive and durable. All
UltraLight series mats feature the same 40 denier face fabric and multi-function valve, as well as Sea to Summit's TPU lamination process. For minimalist backpacking and alpine use, the
UltraLight series are a high-performance choice!
The
Comfort Light series mats provide lightweight design, but with added comfort and insulation. The
Comfort Light series adds a double layer of Air Sprung Cells under the torso, with a single layer under the head and feet. This combination provides enhanced comfort for the back and shoulders, but maintains a light weight and packability. The comfort light series area few ounces heavier than the
Ultralight series mats, but the additional support and warmth are worth the minimal extra weight. The insulated model of the
Comfort Light also has an R-value of 4.2, which is an improvement over the 3.3 of the insulated
UltraLight model. The
Comfort Light series mats are perfect for hiking, backpacking, canoe camping and other activities where a comfortable, yet light sleeping mat is required.
The
Comfort Plus and
Comfort Plus Insulated mats are the most comfortable and thick of Sea to Summit's mattress line, however this enhanced comfort does not detract from the level of backcountry performance that these models provide. Featuring the same innovative materials and construction as the other mats in the Sea to Summit line, the
Comfort Plus series are built to be light, durable and comfortable. Yet where the
UltraLight series is geared toward minimalism and weight savings, the
Comfort Plus series is primarily concerned with comfort and stability. Featuring two individual layers of Air Sprung Cells, each with its own independent Multi-function Valve,
Comfort Plus series mats can be inflated with a different level of firmness each layer of air cells, for a combination of comfort, stability and cushioning from rough ground. The dual layered construction of the
Comfort Plus series also makes these the warmest mats in the Sea to Summit line. The
Comfort Plus is the perfect mat for those who have trouble sleeping on rough ground, or if you value comfort above all else. The
insulated model is also ideal for cold weather excursions.
