The living legend, Fred Beckey, will be live in the flesh at OGE giving a presentation on his Favorite Climbs of North America. When people here his name, one thing comes to mind – unofficial world record holder of first ascents. For decades, he’s been staking a claim to first ascents all over the world, and at 90 years old he is still climbing to this day!
In cooperation with Petra Cliffs Climbing Center and the UVM Outing Club, we are beyond excited to have such a prominent figure in the climbing world come give a presentation. Join us for this once in a lifetime opportunity and enjoy some great food and drinks from Big Fatty’s BBQ.
Fred Beckey is truly passionate and deeply in love with the sport of climbing. While the man has more first ascents than anyone else, he really isn’t in it for the recognition. Adidas recently presented him with the Outdoor Industry Lifetime Achievement Award, when asked about receiving the award, Fred Beckey says, “I just climb for the fun of it… I’m not into awards. I don’t do stuff for awards.”
The New York Times has this to say about Beckey, “He had been called a vagabond, a recluse and a schemer, a cantankerous mountain man hiding his little black book of secret climbing techniques from the world. In seven decades, he had climbed more virgin ascents than any mountaineer alive.”
As for the “little black book”, Beckey says it doesn’t exist. In a recent interview with Amanda Fox at climbing.com Fred had this to say about it, “Once someone starts some rumor, everyone else picks it up.”
