Deuter is the leading backpack brand in Germany and Europe, and one of the longest-running brands of any sort in the outdoor industry. Founded by Hans Deuter in 1898, Deuter began its life supplying mailbags and postman sacks to the Bavarian Royal Mail. By 1910, Deuter was providing a variety of backpacks, knapsacks, satchels, and tents to the military in advance of World War I. Deuter packs were used on the North Face of the Eiger during the first ascent in 1938, and on the first ascent of Nanga Parbat by Hermann Buhls in 1953. They introduced the very first line of nylon backpacks in 1968. Deuter’s leadership in the backpack market and commitment to innovation continues to this day.
