Katy began making her salve in 2001 for her friends and family. Using her knowledge of native plants and their medicinal properties, she decided to create a salve that would be useful for people with skin problems yet have a soothing feel and smell. The first batch of hand jam was made with hand picked buds from a particular willow species as well as Oregon Grape, Chickweed and home-grown, shade-dried calendula. Because the tins were such a hit within her community she decided to market the product to climbing and outdoor stores.

Katy and three of her friends from Seattle, Washington created the company and began producing Katys Hand Jam. As avid outdoor enthusiasts they understand the pain and abuse that one's body goes through in a day, especially while climbing.
