Innovation with passion. That’s the mantra of La Sportiva, the Italian sport shoe company from Ziano di Fiemme whose iconic yellow boots and shoes can be found on mountainsides worldwide. The majority of La Sportiva footwear is still produced in their small, 150-person factory in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, where the spirit and heritage of master alpinists like Walter Bonatti and Reinhold Messner lives on.
- Top choice for the fast packer or thru hiker Review by Chris S (Staff)
My favorite feature of these shoes is their breathability. The AirMesh upper is unbeatable. Ever own a shoe where you can feel the breeze cutting through the mesh? If you haven't, you should try out the Wildcats. These were a perfect match for the sweltering heat of Southern and Northern California. Regardless of one's footwear, you will get black dusty feet on the PCT and I was glad to have a shoe that kept my toes dry and comfortable. They do take on water quickly because the mesh of the shoe goes all the way down to the midsole, but having a shoe with utmost breathability far outweighed my feet getting dirty inside. I will say that in some of the sandier sections of the trail, the shoes did fill up with sand on a few occasions when the inner liner was compromised. Thant would be my biggest ding on the shoes. The outsoles help up amazingly well and the Frixion AT rubber really does have unparalleled traction on rock. Yes, you can get tackier rubber from La Sportiva's Ultra Raptor (also a great shoe), but the Wildcat's are top performers on White Mountain Granite, the rock of the Sierra Nevada passes, and on the flanks of Camel's Hump, etc. Sizing: Size up! Although a bit extreme, I am a size 11.5 and size up to a 13 in this shoe. I find that La Sportiva's generally run short, but since they have a snug heel you can afford the extra length. At a minimum, I would size up a half size, but you can definitely do a full size.
The Wildcats are my go to backpacking shoe, and while I have done some trail running in them, I think they excel for the light hiker, thru hiker, section hiker or anyone who wants to take weight off your feet but not sacrifice underfoot protection or traction. Enjoy!
