The Ultimate Hoody starts with GORE WINDSTOPPER outer fabric, which is totally windproof, water-resistant, and more breathable than a totally waterproof hard shell. Mammut has added a unique backing fabric not found on other Windstopper jackets, with a dimpled surface reminiscent of a golf ball; presumably the dimples trap air for extra insulation, and the effect is nice to look at to boot. Thumb loops at the ends of the sleeves - another feature left out of most soft shells - allow for easy layering and a good interface with gloves, and the package is rounded out with full-length, hem-to-bicep side zips for massive ventilation potential when working really hard.

Whether you've got the Ultimate Hoody sealed up for protection against battering winds or you've left it unzipped and fluttering in the breeze as you chug your way up the approach to the treeline, it's a jacket that you can wear all day long in a huge variety of conditions. Ultimate Hoody, indeed.
