Mountain Equipment is a company that knows a thing or two about down expedition clothing. Founded by noted down expert Peter Hutchinson in 1961, Mountain Equipment's parkas and sleeping bags have been a fixture of British expeditions ever since, including the first-of-its-kind down suit they made for Don Whillan's Annapurna climb in 1970. The Himal Jacket is one of the heirs to all of that expertise, and it's the warmest jacket that GearX currently carries. The warmth of the Himal comes courtesy of 350 grams of goose down, with a minimum fill power of 675. This places it just below the Everest-worthy "expedition parka" category, in both weight and price. Most users will find it warm enough for virtually any mountain ascent below 8000 meters and away from the polar regions; if you need a jacket that is warmer than the Himal, you probably know it already. The torso of the Himal uses box-wall construction, which means that the down is contained within a number of box-shaped baffles. All down jackets have baffles, which are compartments that keep the down clusters from falling to the bottom of the jacket; box-shaped baffles allow the down to loft to the maximum extent right up to the edge of each baffle, which eliminates cold spots.
The arms of the Himal, meanwhile, are sewn-through, which means that each of the baffle is shaped more like a pinched circle than a box. This reduces weight, complexity, and price compared to the full box-wall method.

ABOUT MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT
Based in Cheshire, United Kingdom, Mountain Equipment has been going Above and Beyond since 1961. For over five decades, they have been equipping expeditions for the harshest conditions on earth. They have participated in every British first ascent of an 8000m peak, been part of more than 175 Everest summits by International Mountain Guides and Sherpas, and equipped unsupported trips to the North and South Poles. They made the very first one-piece down suit for mountaineering use, for Don Whillan's 1970 Annapurna expedition. So whether you are going on expedition to the Himalaya or learning the ropes in North Wales (or Vermont!) you can do so safe in the knowledge that your Mountain Equipment gear has been proven to perform.
