When you leave the low-altitude world behind and rise above the sheltering embrace of the trees, you want the best protection you can get when a sudden storm rolls in. The Mountain Hardwear Asteria Jacket is the one of the most protective women's hard shells that GearX sells, and also one of the most breathable thanks to its air-permeable Dry.Q Elite fabric, so you won't find your baselayers soaked with sweat at the end of the day. The fabric is tough 70-denier stuff, so while this isn't one of those superlight shells that packs down to the size of an apple, it is burly enough to stand up to the use and abuse of serious mountaineering excursions, high above it all.Features:
- Trim, feminine alpine fit
- Helmet-compatible hood with single-pull adjustment system and extra beefy brim
- Chest-high hand pockets stay out of the way of a harness or pack straps
- Superlight, extra-long pit zips for ventilation
- Welded watertight pockets and zips seal out moisture
- Interior zip pocket for keys, ID, other small items
- Micro-Chamois™-lined chin guard eliminates zipper chafe
- Average weight: 469g / 16.5 oz

The best hardshell in the store, bar noneI'm gonna let you guys in on a secret: the Mountain Hardwear Asteria Jacket is the best mountaineering hardshell in our whole store, not just the women's section. Yes, even better than the ones embroidered with a bird skeleton and a black-and-gold diamond hang tag.
The construction of the Asteria is fine - maybe not as striking as the aforementioned bird-logo brand, but perfectly serviceable. It's the technology that really sets this technology apart. The air-permeable Dry.Q Elite membrane is the real deal when it comes to all day wet weather comfort. I bought one of these jackets for my girlfriend, and it was bone dry inside after a day of kayaking in the Adirondacks, while my competing-brand jacket (of similar price and 3-layer construction) was soaked inside and out. And yes, I use Sport Wash to maintain the DWR.
My only complaint is that the hood on the Asteria is a bit floppy and awkwardly shaped when worn without a climbing helmet. But if you want a good-looking jacket that will keep you dry in the worst kinds of weather, this is the deal for you.
