Have you ever been hiking down a trail and found yourself struck by the thought of how much fun it would be to bike down instead? We certainly have. But the problem, of course, is getting a bike to the top of the trail in the first place. Mountain bikes can be awfully heavy, after all, and carrying them up stretches of unrideable terrain on your shoulder is no easy to thing to do. The Austrian mountain sports company, Ortovox, recognized this problem - and created a whole new type of vehicle for a whole new type of adventure. Enter the Ortovox Mountainskyver. The Mountainskyver is perhaps best described as a "foldable mountain scooter." It has many of the characteristics of a folding bicycle (handlebars, wheels, disc brakes, suspension) but no pedals or chain - the user instead stands upright on a pair of fixed platforms, and there is no seat. The entire thing folds up for transport in its included backpack, and Ortovox has paid special attention to developing a carrying system which is comfortable for the ascent. The Mountainskyver TRAIL, the model offered here, features a single-bridge front fork with 65mm of travel and a 60mm rear shock absorber. Mechanical disk brakes provide stopping power at the front and rear. The whole vehicle is extremely reliable and low-maintenance compared to a bicycle (no shifting systems or chains to maintain), and it is warranted by GearX to be free of defects in material and workmanship for 1 year.
