Osprey's Aether 70 is the backpacking equivalent of a luxury SUV: it's comfortable, feature-rich, and at home on all kinds of terrain. It's much more eco-friendly than the SUV would be, of course; this pack doesn't guzzle gas, it guzzles gear. Its 70-liter capacity is sufficient for many types of trips, whether it's a 5-day hike in the Sierras or a climb to the summit of Everest (the Aether has been there!).

Here are a few of the features that set the Aether apart from the crowd:

  • Osprey pack frames have a pair of "wings" that sprout behind where the ends of the hipbelt attach to the pack. Many people find that these wings cradle their hips nicely and provide good weight transfer.
  • The AirStream ventilated back panel features a velcro-based adjustment system that allows you to fine-tune the pack to your torso length within each pack size (small/medium/large).
  • The hydration sleeve on this pack is cleverly located between the back panel and the pack body, instead of inside the pack, which simplifies refilling and protects the pack contents from spills.
  • The front stretch pocket is well-designed and handy for stashing layers that you will be taking on and off throughout today, and the compression straps that run across the front of the pack provide a handy external stowage option not found on many other packs in this category.

But that's not all, of course, so here comes our usual bulleted list of
