The Outdoor Research Lodestar Jacket is a first-of-its-kind softshell jacket, which has garnered a lot of press and a Polartec Apex Award for its innovative construction. Designed for alpine climbing in cold conditions, the Lodestar features Polartec Power Shield Pro fabric backed with high-loft fleece - really high-loft fleece. This makes the Lodestar one of the warmest soft shell jackets on the market in terms of stand-alone insulating power, but the breathability afforded by the Power Shield Pro membrane and the air channels between the squares of high-loft fleece help prevent overheating. The fleece in the core and on the underside of the arms is higher-loft than that on the top of the arms, the shoulders, and the hood.

Polartec's Power Shield Pro textile is a membrane softshell fabric that provides a high degree of water resistance and near-total windproofness, but still allows enough air exchange to remove water vapor from the inside of the jacket. It provides a nice balance that falls in between non-membrane softshells and softshells equipped with 100% waterproof/windproof membranes, which provide good protection but less temperature regulation.
