Even on very cold winter days, hikers and climbers still find themselves shedding layers and opening zippers to cool off as their exertion causes them to get hot and steamy. But that warmth won't last forever - clouds roll in, the wind kicks up, the sun dips towards the horizon, and worse yet, it's your turn to be on belay or set up camp. But don't worry - the Outdoor Research Maestro Jacket is here to save all of that precious warmth, and keep it with you until you're on the move again.
The Maestro owes its exceptionally light weight and compressible nature to its two principal ingredients: Pertex® Quantum fabric and 800+ fill power down. Quantum is a highly-engineered fabric which is well-known not only for light weight and compressibility, but also durablility and water resistance - in short, the ideal material for making a high-end down jacket like this one.
Contained within that lightweight fabric is high-lofting 800+ fill power down, with fully-baffled construction that eliminates cold spots along the seams. The two handwarmer pockets have plenty of this toasty insulation surrounding them, so you can keep your hands nice and warm while you're waiting for your partner to climb or your dinner water to boil.
And since you can't feel good in the backcountry without a good night's sleep, the Maestro has you covered there too - a stuff pocket in the back of the jacket turns it into a comfortable down pillow. Sleep well!

Light, warm, packable... Awesome ValueLooked at this jacket and the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Hoody. Though I liked the compactness and the higher collar height at the chin of the MHW piece... the wimpy one-way zipper and poor hood adjustments were deal breakers. The maestro on the other hand might be a little heavier and less compact... but it's warmer, has a beefy two-way zipper, and is still plenty small to bring just in case.
To give you an idea of how warm it is... This morning was 7 degrees out and the maestro was almost too warm on my walk to work over just my work shirt.
Definitely a good buy
