Details

What is the Boreas Pull-on, exactly? Is it a long-sleeve shirt? Is it a soft-shell jacket? It's hard to pin it to one particular category, because its performance spans so many.

In basic terms, the Boreas is a lightweight stretch pullover made of Matrix SWS (Single Weave Stretch) fabric. The hood makes it look like a cold-weather piece in photos, but it's really at home providing sun protection in warmer climates, whether they are deserts or glaciers. That's what's so interesting about the Boreas - you could wear it on the beach in the summer just as easily as on a trek to base camp in the Himalayas.

ABOUT RAB

In 1981, British mountaineer Robert “Rab” Carrington started making down jackets and sleeping bags in Sheffield, England. Inspired by the new style of lightweight alpine climbing which he helped pioneer, Rab made it his mission to make equipment that would withstand “the most extreme conditions in the world.”

Rab’s product line has expanded dramatically since then, but Rab’s commitment to functionality, durability, and value remains as strong as ever. At GearX.com, we are continually impressed by Rab’s superb knowledge of technical fabrics (they were the originators of Pertex) and attention to small yet crucial details like high-quality zippers. No matter which Rab product you choose, you can be sure that it will be a faithful companion in the mountains.

Great layer Review by Harry Potter
A must have layer for any activity. Light weight, 4-way stretch, zipper chest pocket, scuba hood, wind blocker, whats not to love? I use the Boreas year round, between base and mid layers while skiing, wind layer while hiking or climbing, light weight top once the sun goes down in the summer. Really, there isn't a time when wish you weren't wearing this top. (Posted on 1/24/13)
Great lightweight jacket with excellent dry weather protection Review by Justin
I’ve had this jacket out on the trails for a few days now and it is pretty sweet. I’ll cut to the chase and avoid rehashing other reviews you might have seen. The Boreas is lightweight (think shirt), dries super fast, is extremely breathable, and the hood and collar are perfect size in that they are not restrictively snug nor will blow around in high winds. I played around with these features today on a trail run in 45 degree weather and found the Boreas to be more breathable than I expected. In my unofficial test I zipped the Boreas up tight and tried to overheat the jacket. I never felt clammy or wet despite wearing the jacket next to my skin.

The downside to this garment is that it provides no softshell-like wet weather protection. There is no beading of any kind going on even when the jacket is held vertical and water is dropped onto the face. In sum, the Boreas is a superbly breathable, lightweight, excellent fitting, wind resistant jacket, but it will not provide you with any wet weather protection. This jacket will be a welcome addition to my minimalist backpacking list as it is very versatile, but I certainly will still be packing a hardshell in case of any rain. If you are a warmer weather dayhiker, than this is all the jacket you need.

Also, fit is different than the exodus. The Exodus was too tight for me in the sleeves/bicep/chest areas, while the Boreas fit me perfectly. 195lbs, 6 ft = Large. (Posted on 4/3/11)
