Touching The Void

Touching The Void is an astounding true story of one man's survival against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates venture off to attempt to climb the unconquered West Face of Siula Grande, a remote, spectacular, ice-covered mountain in the Peruvian Andes.

After several minor accidents and difficulties, they make it to the summit. Then, on the way back, disaster strikes. Joe's leg is horrifically fractured and Simon has to try to get him back to camp by lowering him, in stages, down the mountain.

Exhausted, dehydrated, out of food and water, they are anxious to get back and so continue their descent in darkness. That mistake results in Joe dangling, suspended over a void of blackness, unable to reach solid ground, and Simon desperately trying to hold him there, while the ice he is sitting on crumbles away beneath him.

Eventually Simon must make a choice... to cut the rope holding Joe to save himself, or to be surely pulled down the mountain with him.

Simon cuts the rope.

Weak and frostbitten, he returns to camp and must tell their non-climbing companion what has occured. He then struggles with grief and guilt as he slowly regains his strength.

Joe incredibly survives the fall. The rest of the book is his struggle, alone, with a useless leg and many other physical problems, as he makes his way back to camp.

His immense inner strength and refusal to give up is amazing. The story is told with such graphic truth that you can amost feel his agony and share his dispair. You are there with him on the mountain.

The fact that this book is written by the actual person and not just retold by a professional writer adds so much depth and realism to the experience. And the writing itself is professional, superb and gripping. It's just so mind-blowing to realise that this incredible journey is not just a story, it really happened!

I highly recommend Touching The Void to anyone who loves to become totally immersed in what they are reading and wants to be inspired and challenged.
