"Shocking Blue" may be an unconventional name for a sleeping bag, but it's not hard to see where this bag got its name: when the first-generation Valandre Shocking Blue was launched at the 2001 Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City, its revolutionary design and construction were truly shocking. To this day, the Shocking Blue remains one of the most radical bags on the market, and its production is a truly global affair; it was conceived in Belcaire, France, by a company headed by a Dane, then sewn out of Japanese fabric with a Taiwanese durable-water-repellent finish in Tunisia before being filled with fat French grey goose down from the Toulouse area. The result is quite spectacular: a roomy bag that feels like it's floating on top of you, with a limit of comfort around -15o F, and a total weight of just 3lbs 1 oz.
This "Midnight Special" of sleeping bags consists of a staggering 91 different pieces, assembled in three dimensions with a simple inside stitch on all baffles. Good thing Valandre employs such a talented sewing team. The baffle height varies throughout the bag, with increased height on the body/chest section and smaller height on the leg section. The footbox is a true masterpiece, being shaped so that your feet can rest at their natural angle without pushing against the bag and compressing the down.
All of these compartments are filled with 850+ fill goose down sourced within a few hours' drive of Valandre's headquarters in Belcaire. There are a lot of outdoor companies who will boast to you about the superlative quality of the down that they are using, but no one is more transparent about the production and selection of their down than Valandre (except maybe Sea to Summit. Good for them.) The 781 grams of down inside the Shocking Blue gives it a lower limit of comfort around -15o F, and an extreme rating of -25oF. All of that in a roomy bag that weighs just 1380 g / 3lbs 1 oz. Some users even take their Shocking Blues on 8000M expeditions and use them in conjunction with a down suit...an approach that's not for the faint of heart!

Please note that Valandre products ordered through GearX.com ship directly from the US distributor in Utah. So, you won't find them if you come into our Burlington store. We're bummed about that too.
